Supplier code sanity check

Supplier HS Code vs US HTS Code

Why a supplier-provided HS code is only a starting point for US imports, and what to verify before using it for duty planning.

For importers, ecommerce operators, and sourcing teams comparing supplier paperwork with US landed-cost assumptions.

Moya provides AI-assisted research for U.S. import workflows. Results are not a binding CBP ruling, legal advice, customs brokerage advice, or filing instruction. Verify HTS codes, duties, and compliance requirements with a licensed customs broker or official source before relying on them.

Why this needs a second pass

Suppliers often provide a six-digit HS code or a foreign tariff code. That can be useful, but US import planning usually needs the full US HTS path, current tariff signals, and enough product facts to explain the classification logic.

Product facts to collect

  • The exact product description from the purchase order or listing.
  • Material composition, function, end use, included accessories, and packaging.
  • Supplier HS code, country of origin, and any freight forwarder or broker code already suggested.
  • Whether the product is a set, kit, part, accessory, replacement item, or finished good.

What Moya checks

  • Validate whether the supplier code maps cleanly to a US HTS candidate.
  • Search for CBP ruling evidence supporting or contradicting the candidate.
  • Identify the details a broker would need before relying on the code.
  • Check tariff exposure only after the classification candidate is defensible.

Caveats before relying on the answer

  • The first six HS digits are not enough for many US duty decisions.
  • A code used by a supplier in another country may not match the US 10-digit HTS result.
  • Moya is a research assistant, not a substitute for broker review or a binding CBP ruling.
